Safety is a large concern for many when traveling to new foreign cities. Yet, foreign cities can feel safer than the media projects. This has been a huge travel learning. There are so many beautiful places to see in the world, don’t let fear keep you from exploring.

The key is to get comfortable with your surroundings, know what areas are safe, and what areas are best to avoid. Do your research beforehand to get an understanding of safety in the city. When you arrive at a new destination, connect with locals to get inside tips on navigating the city in the safest way possible. There can be danger and violence in every city, educating yourself on how to navigate it safely and staying hyperaware are key.

⁣⁣⁣Here are seven tips to stay safe while traveling in Rio de Janeiro πŸ‡§πŸ‡·:
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

1. Remove and don’t wear jewelry.

Don’t wear jewelry or valuables (necklaces, rings, earrings, Apple watches, etc, etc). For best safety, keep these stored away in a safe place in your accommodations. You don’t want to stand out as a target. Not wearing them protects you and your valuables. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

2. Be hyper-aware of your surroundings.

Hyperawareness is one of the most important ways to stay safe while traveling in foreign cities. Stay hyper-aware of what is happening around you at all times.

3. Keep your phone hidden away while riding the metro and out in public places.

One trick for extra safety is to have your phone tucked under your shirt against your body while riding the metro. Body straps and fanny packs are also great for keeping valuables like phones safely stored away.

It is also best to avoid taking pictures and videos while out in public places. If you want to capture photos and videos, be aware of your surroundings and proceed with caution.

4. Use Ubers at night for the safest transportation.

Walking or taking the metro is completely fine during the day in safe areas. However, do NOT do this at night. Always use Uber as the safest transportation option at night. If there are any issues with Uber, have your destination address ready, take a taxi and ask for the receipt at the end of your ride.
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

5. Only carry the cash and credit cards that you need.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Only carry what you need when you head out in public places. Always leave the rest of your cash and credit cards stored and locked away in your accommodations. In the case you get robbed, this will be a lifesaver.

6. Always keep your possessions close.

Whether you’re on the beach or at a restaurant, always keep your possessions nearby and under your watch. Avoid taking valuable items to the beach as a general precaution. If you go in the water, ask someone nearby that you can trust to watch your things. The beach and tourist attractions are common targets.

7. In the unfortunate event of being robbed, just let it go. No material possession is worth your safety.

Violent cases usually result from those who resist a robbery. If robbed, just give up your items. Nothing is worth sacrificing your personal safety.

Finally, knowledge of your surroundings and hyperawareness is critical to staying safe while traveling in any foreign city. Rio de Janeiro is too beautiful of a city to miss! Use these tips to stay safe while traveling in the city.

Hola, I'm Kristin
Your Transformation + Life Coach.

I'm here to tell you that the leap is always worth it! My story really began the moment I took the leap. I left my 9-5, put all of my things in storage and headed on a 1-month (turned 3-month) solo backpacking adventure. The journey ever since has been more beautiful and magical than I could have ever imagined.
